Committee Minutes

Minutes of the Meeting held on 5 July 2005 at 4 Ann's Place Langley Moor, Durham

Present: Lo Brown, David Sowerbutts, Morag Craig, Julie Hogg, Dave Gibson, Ray Logan, Richard Cowen.

1. Apologies:
None.

2. Minutes of last meeting
Taken as read.

3. Matters arising
None.

4. Correspondence
The following correspondence of note had been received:

» Volunteers Conference 17 September at Marriot Hotel Gateshead - Ray and Richard to consider going and doing a report for the following Newsletter.

» Feed the Birds Day - details to be given in next Newsletter.

» Dr Clare Stancliffe wrote, in response to a question as to why members did not attend meets, to give some personal reasons.

» Local Group Annual Report - now been submitted to Regional Office.

5. Speakers, Programme cards, Rooms and Parking
Julie said the programme as given in the last Minutes was confirmed subject to a response from Ian Bond.  Programme cards can now be produced.  David S to book rooms at the University Science Site.  Parking not understood to be a problem for evening meetings booked at the University.

6. 2006 trips, Prices and Newsletter
New Years trip will be Monday 2 January.

The following coach trips are proposed:

April 29 - N Yorks Coast
May 20 - Allenbanks
June 17 - Happy Valley, Wooller and St Abbs Head

Minibus trip will be Feb/March, probably to Fairburn Ings.

Lo is producing the Bempton Cliffs report, Ray will do the Nightjars, Dave G the Teesmouth and Richard Holy Island.

Lo mentioned that on the website, it said members were entitled to travel at £12.00.   This should read Durham Branch members.  Julie agreed to look into this.

It was emphasized we need to send out the September issue of the Newsletter early so all reports etc. for that issue should be in promptly.

7. Signatories for Bank accounts and Committee membership
Lo, David S and Richard agreed to complete the arrangements with the Banks as soon as possible.

Lo reminded everyone that she and Morag are stepping down from next April.  Steps must be taken to find a new Group leader, coach administrator, and person to be available for door and raffles at indoor meetings.

This to be announced in next Newsletter and raised at first meeting to try to co-opt new Committee members.

8. Set aside
Richard mentioned concerns he had at early spraying of set aside land with non selective herbicides which destroyed green cover during the nesting season.  It was agreed he should write to the Regional Office about this.

9. AOB
Richard mentioned a petition arranged by in respect to windfarms on the west of Scotland which were said to be a potential danger to birds, many vulnerable e.g. the sea eagle.  Anyone interested can visit the site on http://www.proact-campaigns.net/windfarmsandbirds/appeal_to_ec.html.

Ray mentioned RSPB had now purchased the additional land at Geltsdale and mentioned that black grouse and hen harrier were there this year.  He also mentioned that although no further volunteers were required this year, they were looking for volunteers next year.
